Date/Time: 3 March 2023, 4:30pm ET Location: West Chester Univerity, Anderson Hall, Room 211 Speaker: Curtis Kent (Brigham Young University) Title: Inverse Limits of Covering Spaces Abstract: Traditionally, covering spaces have been a central tool for understanding fundamental groups of spaces. However, for complicated spaces many subgroups of the fundamental group do not correspond to covering spaces. Here we will consider inverse limits of covering spaces, which we call pro-coverings, of both CW-complexes and more general spaces. Pro-coverings give an additional tool to study the fundamental group of complicated spaces. We will show that pro-coverings are often path-connected and can be constructed as a quotient of the path space. We will use a specific pro-covering to construct a splitting of the first homology of Peano continua.
