4:30 TALK:      Elizabeth Sell, Millersville University

“Geometric and topological invariants of singularities”

Abstract: The study of singularities is at the crossroads of several areas of mathematics,

including topology, algebraic geometry, and analytic geometry.  In this talk, I will give

a general introduction to the study of isolated singularities in algebraic geometry.  In

particular, I will describe some of the geometric and topological invariants associated

to plane curve singularities and normal surface singularities, and will conclude with a

description of my work on surface singularities defined by an equation of the form

z^n=f(x,y).  No prior knowledge of algebraic geometry is necessary.

     EVERYONE WELCOME
