TETRAHEDRAL GEOMETRY/TOPOLOGY SEMINAR

  FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE:               Friday, February 3, 2006

LOCATION:     Hempfield High School, Room 213 (directions attached)

followed by dinner at a place to be determined.

4:45 TALK:       Ron Umble, Millersville University

"Operads with a Twist of Matrons"

ABSTRACT: In this talk, we’ll review the associative and A_\infty operads

\mathcal{Ass} and \mathcal{A}_\infty and show how they can be used to define an

associative algebra and A_\infty algebra structure on a module H.  We’ll observe

that Stasheff’s associahedra realize \mathcal{A}_\infty.  I’ll conclude the talk with

a hint of the more general objects \mathcal{H} and \mathcal{H}_\infty, called

matrons, which can be used to define bialgebra and A_\infty bialgebra structures on H

in a completely analogous way.  And I’ll mention that the family of polytopes realizing

\mathcal{H_\infty} includes and enlarges the family of associahedra.
