TETRAHEDRAL GEOMETRY/TOPOLOGY SEMINAR

  FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE:               Friday, November 18, 2005

LOCATION:     Millersville University, Wickersham Hall Room 209

followed by dinner at a place to be determined.

5:00 TALK:       Neal Stoltzfus, Louisiana State University

"Counting Circles: Jones Polynomial of Knots, Temperley Lieb algebras and the root poset of A_n"

ABSTRACT: Using the simple geometric idea of counting circles in <<closing up>> certain diagrams,

I will give an introduction to the Jones polynomial of a knot using Kauffman's bracket. Then, the same

diagrams will be used to construct the Temperley Lieb algebra together with a symmetric bilinear form

which also gives the Jones polynomial of a closed braid representation of a knot or link. If time permits,

I will finally relate this construction to the positive root poset of the symmetric group.
