      FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT

DATE:               Friday, April 1, 2005

LOCATION:     Hempfield High School, Room 213 (directions attached)

followed by dinner at a place to be determined.

4:30 TALK:       Ken Brakke, Susquehanna University

               "Triply Periodic Minimal Surfaces"

ABSTRACT:     There are vast areas of membranes in our cells that must fold into

small spaces.  These membranes can take on remarkable shapes,

various and beautiful crystal-like structures that repeat in three-

dimensional patterns.  The mathematical description of these shapes

turns out to be the same as for soap films.  I will show how my

Surface Evolver software is used to model such surfaces conjectured

to exist from mathematical and observational evidence.
