ANNOUNCEMENT:     TRIANGLE GEOMETRY-TOPOLOGY SEMINAR

DATE:             Thursday, September 4, 2003

LOCATION:         Hempfield High School, Room 213 (directions attached)

followed by dinner at Gatsby's on Main in Landisville

4:30 TALK:        Dennis DeTurck, University of Pennsylvania

                  "Poincare's conjecture, Thurston's program, and

                  Perelman's proof"

ABSTRACT: The goal of this talk is to present the main

ideas of the program that has led to Perelman's proof

of the Poincare conjecture. We'll look at the ideas

                  behind Thurston's geometrization conjecture and

Hamilton's analytic approach using Ricci flow. The

goal will be to provide a guide (or at least an entry

point) to the work of Perelman that completes the

proof.

EVERYONE WELCOME.
